Description
The King is dead. The kingdom is on the brink of chaos. Each member of the royal court shares a secret clue that points to the next heir. An Outsider has infiltrated the court and does not know that clue. They must blend in, listen, and steal it. The court must catch them first. Will the Outsider name the heir before they are unmasked?
How to play
You only see your own word. The court all share the same one. All Outsiders share a different word. Nobody is told who is who.
A round is two laps of hints around the table, then a vote. Each round brings a new first player, new words, and new Outsiders.
If Hidden roles is on, you are not told whether you are Court or Outsider. You still see your word. Roles are shown when the round ends. If Seppuku is on, everyone can use it, so the button does not give your role away.
Roles
Court
You share one word. Hint so the rest of the court can tell you belong, without handing the word to an Outsider. Accuse every Outsider in the vote.
Outsider
You share one other word with any other Outsiders. Blend in, listen, and survive the vote. If even one Outsider is not accused, the Outsiders score.
A round
A random player starts. Each person gives a hint: a word or a short sentence. You may hint with your actual word, but that can give you away. Then the same order hints a second time.
After both laps, everyone votes at once.
The vote
Vote for as many people as there are Outsiders. Not yourself, and not the same person twice. Outsiders may vote for Outsiders, and often should.
Accusation starts at the top of the tally. A whole tie is accused only if it fits the seats left. If two people are tied for the last seat, neither is accused.
Seppuku
If Seppuku is on and at least one Outsider was not accused, everyone sees an overlay. Only uncaught Outsiders may guess the court's word. Caught Outsiders and the court wait.
The first guess is the only one that counts. The host accepts or denies it. Hunt scores always stand. A hit is +1 for the guesser. A miss is -1 for the guesser.
If every uncaught Outsider skips, or the offer times out, the round scores from the hunt only.
Scoring
- Court: +1 per Outsider you name, win or lose. +2 more for every court member if every Outsider is accused.
- Outsiders: +2 each if anyone slipped through. An Outsider who received zero votes also gets +3.
- Rounds add up. Highest total wins. Anyone tied for first wins. It is a draw only if everyone has the same score.
- Seppuku: after the vote, an uncaught Outsider may guess. Hunt scores always stand. A hit is +1 for the guesser. A miss is -1 for the guesser. Nobody else scores from Seppuku.
